How Does Botox Work?

Botox works by blocking nerve impulses to those tiny facial muscles, therefore allowing the muscles to relax and the skin remains smooth and unwrinkled. Untreated facial muslces contract normally, which allows for normal facial expression.

Botox injections are only temporary and will last from three to six months. Therefore, you will need to have injections two to three times a year. Studies have shown that the duration of the benefits of Botox increase over time, so you should require fewer injections in the future.

The Procedure

The procedure is simple and safe. A very tiny micro-needle, containing a very small amount of Botox is injected into several locations on the face. There is very little pain associated with the injections, so no anesthetic solution is needed. You are able to drive yourself home or back to work. The procedure will only take 15-20 minutes allowing you to experience a "lunch-time face lift."

Side Effects

There are few side effects—all of which are temporary. Less than 1% of patients may experience mild bruising or a mild headache. In rare cases, the toxin may migrate, causing temporary drooping of the eyelid. This is reversible with prescription eyedrops.
